It’s imperative that your ball rolls the correct speed for the line you have chosen. There are many different lines you may choose and still make a putt… the key is to keep your eyes open for the different possibilities so you may choose the line/speed you like the best.
There is a great drill you can use to practice using different speeds to make the same putt. You will need 3 tees, 2 balls and a putt that, at the slowest speed, will break 4″ to 8″ from the edge of the cup. Preferably, you will practice this drill with putts that break to the left & to the right.
Begin the drill by placing a tee 5′ to 7′ from the hole to ensure your ball position is consistent. Please do not go further than 7′ as we can not permit ourselves to practice from lengths that we cannot Make 95% of the time. ONLY PRACTICE MAKING PUTTS!! It will take a few warm up putts to establish the absolute highest starting point that the putt can be made at a complete die speed. The 2nd tee shall go on this line. The 3rd tee should go half way between the hole and the 2nd tee for a putt that requires more speed.
It is important that you alternate from one tee to the next so that your practice becomes more random…just like on the golf course where you Never have the same putt twice in a row! It is even more imperative that you go through your ENTIRE physical and mental pre-shot routine for every putt you roll. There is nothing more important to your golf game than making all practice Random and using your Pre-Shot Routine!!
